Mammalian taste perception

چکیده
What is the relationship of Aurora kinases and cancer? All three members of the Aurora kinase family are overexpressed in multiple solid tumors, which is perhaps not surprising considering their functions in cell division. As more and more smallmolecule Aurora kinase inhibitors are being developed, these inhibitors can be used not only for cell-biological studies on the functions of Aurora kinases, but also for developing new anti-cancer drugs. These inhibitors obstruct Aurora kinases, which in turn leads to aberrant mitosis. As a result, the p53-dependent checkpoint is activated and results in the induction of a G1like cell-cycle arrest. Several small-molecule inhibitors of Aurora kinases, such as VX-680, PHA739358 and AZD-1152, have shown anticancer effects in preclinical and clinical trials.

The sweet and the bitter of mammalian taste.
The discovery of two families of mammalian taste receptors has provided important insights into taste recognition and taste perception. Recent studies have examined the receptors and signaling pathways that mediate sweet, bitter, and amino acid taste detection in mammals. These studies demonstrate that taste cells are selectively tuned to different taste modalities and clarify the logic of tast...
متن کاملMammalian Sweet Taste Receptors
The sense of taste provides animals with valuable information about the quality and nutritional value of food. Previously, we identified a large family of mammalian taste receptors involved in bitter taste perception (the T2Rs). We now report the characterization of mammalian sweet taste receptors. First, transgenic rescue experiments prove that the Sac locus encodes T1R3, a member of the T1R f...
متن کاملTaste Perception: Drosophila – A Model of Good Taste
Recent studies of taste receptors in Drosophila show remarkable parallels with the mammalian gustatory system, although the pathways are anatomically distinct. These parallels may reflect crucial constraints in the design of taste detection systems.
متن کاملPutative Mammalian Taste Receptors A Class of Taste-Specific GPCRs with Distinct Topographic Selectivity
Taste represents a major form of sensory input in the animal kingdom. In mammals, taste perception begins with the recognition of tastant molecules by unknown membrane receptors localized on the apical surface of receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelium. We report the cloning and characterization of two novel seven-transmembrane domain proteins expressed in topographically distinct su...
متن کاملGenetic tracing shows segregation of taste neuronal circuitries for bitter and sweet.
The recent discovery of mammalian bitter, sweet, and umami taste receptors indicates how the different taste qualities are encoded at the periphery. However, taste representations in the brain remain elusive. We used a genetic approach to visualize the neuronal circuitries of bitter and sweet tastes in mice to gain insight into how taste recognition is accomplished in the brain. By selectively ...
متن کاملGustatory Perception and Behavior in Drosophila melanogaster
The sense of taste is essential for the survival of virtually all animals. Considered a 'primitive sense' and present in the form of chemotaxis in many bacteria, taste is also a sense of sophistication in humans. Regardless, taste behavior is a crucial activity for the world's most abundant (insects) and most successful (mammals) inhabitants, providing a means of discrimination between nutrient...
